Overview

Service Desk teams often receive requests to schedule server or workstation restarts for routine maintenance. While this may seem like a straightforward task, engineers may lack the necessary access, and poor timing can disrupt client operations. So how can we ensure that server restarts are executed accurately and securely, even without direct access to the client environment?

To address this, we've used an automation that allows engineers to schedule machine restarts confidently, without needing elevated access to the client's systems. Once the desired date and time are selected, Pia will execute the restart precisely as scheduled, eliminating the need for engineers to log in after hours.

Flow

Here’s the flow:

  1. Pia will retrieve the list of servers for the client.
  2. Pia will then present a form for the engineer to select the following:
    • Select a single server.
    • Select an action:
      • Schedule a Server Machine Reboot:
        • If this is selected, Pia will ask you to select Date and Time to schedule the server reboot.
        • Pia will also ask you for any additional comment (optional).
      • Abort a Pending Reboot
  3. Pia will schedule the reboot of the server or cancel the pending reboot based on the selection made.
